@Gen I do not think that alcohol speeds up your metabolism. In fact, it slows it down, quite a bit. When alcohol is present in the body, the body uses its sugar first rather than glucose or fat. So anything you eat contributes to storage within the body (in other words, body fat).

I cannot speak for you; however, I can speak for me. When I drank more than the occasional beer (think college and drinking until I puked, then did some more), I, too, stayed "slim." But I was 18-22 years old, my metabolism ran hotter than a gerbil, and I burned a ton of calories lifting, running, cycling, sexing (is that a word?), goofing around, etc. Testosterone and growth hormone were searing through my veins and there was no possible way that alcohol could make me fat.

But neither could eating a tub of lard.

Now, in my 40s, things are a little different. I can no longer eat whatever I want, drink til I pass out (well, I can do that, but I choose not to), and I have to be serious about exercise. Nothing is easy any more.

I will not say that you shouldn't drink. I think you should. Just not a lot. A beer or a glass of wine every day is okay; I believe that there are health benefits from doing so. However, as far as the alcohol goes, I would refrain from drinking more than that. It interferes with many metabolic processes and this has detrimental effects.

As they say about everything - Moderation. For a good overview on the effects of alcohol, read this.

Here is a question for you...Do you think that alcohol speeds up your metabolism? When I was drinking I lost weight faster than I am now, that I am not drinking.

I think in order to have a great metabolism to do an exercise everyday and eat healthy foods and you will lose your weight. Through exercise it will burn fat and I agree with what you have write in your blog that it's a delicate balance of eating too little and too much and this is true. You should eat enough.

I think that if you eat a decent breakfast and then hit the gym this should give your metabolism a kick start for the day. Then keep it active with 5 small healthy meals throughout the day. If you do not eat enough your metabolism will slow down.

I love the part of the article where you say in the article:
"We eat a dozen cookies and three full glasses of milk and then blame our weight gain on our metabolism. We skip meal after meal and then blame our lack of weight loss on our metabolism. The poor, misunderstood metabolism monster gets the blame in both situations."

This is so true! LOL! I have friends that scuff and ha at me for being thin and saying I must have a high metabolism because of my DNA inheritance. I also eat really healthy. They'll blame their low metabolism also on inheritance, they want to loose weight and then eat crap food. It's really quite funny I find. People love playing the victim. I've gotten to the point were I'll believe what they say about loosing weight when they start to change the story that they are telling the moves them forward and stop complaining. I'm more likely to believe in them and support them when they change their attitudes and actions and thoughts about themselves and others.
