Maybe you should point out that you`re talking about people that dont work out? Cuz for a powerlifter or bodybuilder more food is almost always better..

Bodybuilders in “cutting” phases often eat very little when trying to strip away those last bits of fat. Overeating for them on any given day might be one handful of nuts.
Yes, the amount of calories compared with how much energy you expend is a vital factor, and size of individual meal, and time of day is somewhat important.

i have another suggestion, fill up on a large salad and then order a bowl of soup or appetizer rather than an entree.
It is very easy to overeat. The secret is to try and eat little and often. That way you don’t allow your body to become hungry and so you won’t eat junk food.
