A Note About “Do Follow” Comments

Like what you see here? Become a subscriber today and get a ton of free stuff!. Thanks for coming back!

As you may know, I have set up this site (in fact, all of my sites) as “do follow” because I want to encourage active commenting. It is my belief that doing so will foster an atmosphere of caring and sharing and that this will benefit all of us who come here.

Lately, people have been trying to exploit the system by leaving comments like “Hi.”

Take a little bit more time and add to that please! If you’re going to make the effort and take the time to register, type the comment, and click submit, why not make the comment relevant to the post? Seriously, it takes, what, 30 seconds to make an intelligent comment?

If you make a comment like “Hi” you’ve wasted your time because I will not only remove it, but I will also mark it as SPAM, which will only serve to hamper your commenting abilities on other blogs.

Here’s an excerpt from my newly-updated “Do Follow” page:

Finally, if you make a comment like “Hi” or “Thanks” I will most likely purge it from the system. Let’s work on making this a community where each of us contributes. I do my part by making posts and pages and by responding to comments; can you do your part by making intelligent comments?

I don’t mean to be  a jerk about this. But you have to remember, this is my blog and I put a lot of effort into it. You could return the courtesy by putting a little effort into it.

I certainly hope this is the last time I have to write about this topic, but I am skeptical; there will always be people who want to take and never give anything.

But you’re not like that, right?

I totally agree with you about the comments.. I’m receiving also lots of spam comments with pharmacy or adult Urls but don’t understand why these guys are so stupid, I never accept those comments.

It’s perhaps self fulfilling to these bots to go around and post these cruddy adult links and comments that have no relevance and its nice ppl like ourselves that suffer having to go through all of their junk. When will the spammers give up?

  5. I do install dofollow on all my blogs, and really hate those thanks or i agree with you crap. If you don’t know what to say – just don’t say anything – that’s it. Most people don’t understand that it takes at least a few seconds or just a minute to read and than do reach comment. I personally mark all messages like “great post” as spam as well.

  6. i agree with you they need to post the comments what they feeling absolutely relate to the post..

My peeve is about commentators who don’t appear to read or understand what I’m trying to say, and it shows in their comments…as in they just try to leave a comment and that’s all.

  10. I’m with you on dofollow. Having a dofollow blog definitely is an open invitation to some excellent comments, while at the same time you may be overloaded with fluff like “Hi.” Stick it out and weed through the junk.

I have several sites that have been nofollow for a couple of years that have had minimal comments, some Hi, “nice site”. I have decided to try a new site with dofollow, and even installed keywordluv. I agree with you, if you want to have intelligent comments, then use dofollow, otherwise, turn comments off. I probably will convert my other sites and spend a little more time moderating, but I think it will be better in the long run. Please feel free to comment on my site as well.

  19. I agree, there is a saying about this: "fight spam, not blogs". Not only should blog owners follow this but commentors should also. I much prefer blogs where i can read through the comments for extra information, not for advertisments.

@ Tips – yessir! I use Akismet and it seems pretty good at catching spam comments. I don’t really even care if you put a link in your comment (you get one for your name anyway), as long as it isn’t totally off-topic. This niche, while crowded, still has room for everybody.
