How to Build Muscle Using Body Weight Exercises

herschel-walkerI wrote a post over at the main site, Muscle-Build.com, about building muscle without weights, using standard body weight exercises like pushups, pullups, and squats. Check it out. There's really no excuse any more not to work out and build the body you want. Guys like Herschel Walker did nothing but body weight exercises. He turned out pretty good. By the way, did you know Herschel is 47? And he's starting his Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) career? He's a 6th degree blackbelt in taekwondo.

You’re right, I don’t use weights much but calisthenics, and think gyms are overrated. I’ve also talked about healthier ways to exercise, earlier.

I believe there is no reason of blaming on “no time to gym”. If you do all these workouts and include some dumbells with which you can target all of your body muscle you can build a great physique.

  9. yea I totally agree… You do not even need weight to gain muscle. In fact I recommend that people should start out doing nothing but body weight exercises to build a solid foundation before they even think about lifting heavy weights. If you can’t lift your own body weight you have no right lifting weights. And if body weight starts to get easy you can always use a weighted vest to make it harder. here is a good article on my site dealing with bodyweight exercises. bodyweight exercises

  12. I agree. We have so many options to build muscle.

You don’t need a gym membership, or expensive weight equipment.

I remember back when I first started lifting. I used nothing but basic body weight exercises, and got some pretty decent results.

I remember when I was desperate and wanted to build a weight bench when I was kid… I took some wood, and put it over two buckets! lol I was about 11…

  14. billspaced says:

I did the same thing! I started lifting weights when I was 12. And I was so frightened that I’d get pinned under the bar. I made a weight bench and safety stands all with wood and screws. I didn’t have any power tools, so I did it all be hand. That was a workout in and of itself!

  15. billspaced says:

@ X-Hardgainer Cory ABSOLUTELY. Weights make progressive resistance more convenient. However, there is ZERO excuse not to exercise. A couple coffee cans or water jugs, some chairs for doing decline pushups, etc. is all it takes.

  16. Yeah this is so true, I think Fedor Emelianenko has a similar training routine and he is a machine, even if he looks like a fat accountant.

  17. I agree with the poster that said you should at least use bodyweight exercises as a base.
Too many guys hit the gym and start lifting well beyond what they are ready for and injur themselves. Do the body weight exercises and only if you platau head over to the weights.
I know a guy who just fills a backpack with textbooks though and uses that for extra resistance when he body weight trains too.

  18. ¡Wow! very interesting looking to have 47 years!

  19. Fitness Blog says:

He got a really decent shape. But it seems a bit strange he never worked out in a gym? Does it require you to be overweight if you want to gain the muscles?

  20. Azri Miskal says:

Very true. Too many times, people think that they need to head to a gym before they can get results with their fitness. They fail to realize that you can simply do them from the comfort of your home!

  21. yea, I am agree with you.

  22. The body weight exercises is really important for devolp muscles and lean up your body !
    Cool site !
