The Importance of Proper Hydration

No matter how intense your workout may be, more than likely before, during, and especially after that workout you are going to drink something to rehydrate and replenish that worn out exhausted body. The question then is what are you going to drink?? For the past decade the rise of energy drinks could be described as nothing short of miraculous meteoric rise. Since the days of the mighty Gatorade there has come to the marketplace almost every conceivable color, flavor, and ingredient driven high energy after workout drink.
However, after intense blitzkrieg style advertisements from the television to radio to almost every magazine on earth that has anything to do with fitness many people have started to back away from these so called after workout drinks. If you ask yourself why, the answer is simple and the nutrition label on those energy drinks is the answer. To rattle off just a few of those ingredients words like "horny goat weed", "high fructose corn syrup", and the ever infamous "yellow number 5" are more often than not present in many so called energy drinks.
After analysis and research it seems to be a fitness renaissance going on out there of like minded healthy people that are putting the watermelon berry flavored drinks down and in turn picking up nature's oldest and most trusted hydration drink — Water. Yes water good old fashioned H2O is making a mighty come back on the world scene of fitness and weight loss. Granted there are varying degrees of water from mineral water to sparkling, but the principle idea of H2O is always the same, no added ridiculous named flavors, colors or roots to trick me into thinking I will turn into superman overnight.
As this renaissance of returning to origin continues though many have begun to do extensive studies and research into what types of water should be ingested and have come to the conclusion that not all two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen is the same. No, much of the water that is consumed from bottles distributed to most super markets and grocery store chains has gone through much and lost many of the natural properties it once had. One of the major properties that water needs to keep is the PH balance of the water. For those that are not aware, the PH scale runs from 0 to 14 with a PH of 7 being neutral, neither acidic nor alkaline. You could say that perfect water should be a ph of 7 because this is where it is on the PH scale if you were to go to a melting glacier in Alaska and test that water.
Through the process of reverse osmosis, bottling in plastics, shipping, temperature shifts and sitting on a shelf for weeks most bottled water loses its original neutral ph balance and becomes acidic, therefore becoming almost as useless as all of those energy drinks. This may sound like a conundrum but it is not. With a little research you will find that PH balanced alkaline water is actually easier to come by than you think and is exactly what your body needs for real, proper hydration after a long intense workout.

thanks for this great information…you are saying that those bottled water in the market losses it's natural composition, how about those water drink in glass bottles? don't it have natural composition also?also if you are going to drink those water in plastic bottle, will it brings any side effect?
Nice piece of information. You’ll always need a lot of of hydration, if you want to do hardcore exercise sessions. Without enough, you simply will not be able to perform at a level that gets results from your exercise.
Water definitely speeds up your metabolism as it is needed for many of the metabolic reactions that take place in the body.
Water is the prime example of the need for everything in moderation. i've heard of people dying from over drinking water (and diluting the sodium in their bodies) which resulted in muscles failing to get nerve signals. And we all know what happens when you don't get enough water. Like I said, water is the perfect example of the body's requirement for moderation.
I usually make up my own Isotonic drink after a workout to replace all of the lost water ind minerals.
I use half a pint of water, half a pint of orange juice and a pinch of salt.
Did not realize that water becomes acidic while sitting on the shelves. Maybe another good reason to drink the tap water (with a filter). It is especially important that children hydrate as their little bodies hold a lot less water.
I have a rule of always drinking 2 pints of water for every hour off excersie i do, on top of my normal 6 per day.
I also do as ross says i make my own drink from half and half oj and water
A great fitness post and i hope people follow your advice
I try to take at least 1 liter of water per day.

I admit it, Energy Drinks were a slight addiction of mine once they came out on the scene. It still isn't unlikely that to date I would still pick one up should I need a quick pick me up. However, water is by far our drink of choice. There is a huge difference in how you feel when drinking plenty of water versus not enough.
Blessings!
You have so well explained the importance of Hydration.Though water is old fashioned,I drink regular in a day.Drinking 8 glasses of water a day maintain our good health.I also like that you have mentioned here PH balance of water and describe it.It also nourish our skin.
I love your blog, here is the information and knowledge useful for readers when visiting your Web page, I totally agree with your opinion about the importance of proper care . I can say that: Water is a typical example of the need for everything in our daily life, water is a necessary element to adjust neural activity of all human beings, so the we know what happens when you are not getting enough water. Like I said, water is the perfect element requires the body to regulate. thank you for providing an article is truly amazing about this. I bookmark your site, I'll become your regular readers.

Do really water in plastic bottles have side effects??
I am blessed to have a deep water well. Naturally cold and very crisp tasting. I use a filter pitcher in my fridge and drink my water gratefully. Flavored drinks never quenched my thirst and I can stand sodas.
I Love water but i do like soft drinks aswell and lucozade sport i think that's a nice sport drink.
I love water. It's actually my favorite thing to drink (other than wine
) I've actually always found that the more I drink water the faster and easier it is for me to drop the pounds!
Dehydration is alarming, really, because sometimes you don't even notice that you're dehydrated so thanks for writing this article I hope a lot of people will read this
With more and more modern methods of treating water rising (like reverse osmosis, desalination and so on), it is also becoming increasingly impossible for us to find purely treated water. Everything has either been treated, tampered with artificially or even has some chemicals to maintain it's drinking quality. Whether this will affect our health in the long term remains to be seen, but at least it's better than drinking sugary drinks that are supposed health tonics.
Every morning i always drink 2 glasses of water in the morning instead of coffee.
I always try to drink as much as eight glasses of water a day.
yep just drink and drink..no matter how the feeling sucks because water is the primary need our body always quenches for..it can also heal simple diseases",
People should understand that there were no energy drinks in the past, even them people used to exercise & were far more healthier & fit than us. All of them used water to hydrate Themselves after exercises.
My wife and I have stopped drinking those cola with lots of sugar and started drinking lots of water. In fact I hydrate myself frequently while I walk the golf course during the hot summer months in Florida. I have found that my body performs as well drinking water as it does drinking those energy drinks.
Most people do not even know what's in an energy drink. A lot of them contain caffeine and sugar. Caffeine will dehydrate you more – know what you are drinking to re-hydrate yourself…
I had never thought of water losing it's PH in plastic bottles, crazy thought. I need to invest in some alkaline water and log my training results with the switch. Small diet / nutrition changes can make all the difference. Thanks for the knowledge!
Live and learn. I didn't realize that if water sat for a while in a plastic container it would become more acid. So yes, whilst water from a melting glacier -and we have a few of those here in New Zealand – sounds wonderful, the alkaline water that you refer to is going to be a better health drink.
Rehydration is vital. I know that if I scimp on water when exercising I feel very tired.
You definitely can't argue that being hydrated is important. And nothing does it better than pure water. Drinking pop and stuff will just fry you and make you thirstier and thirstier. I usually try to drink around 10 cups of water a day. It helps things go through your body better, helps you function better, and will also help avoid headaches. Always stick to plain old water I say.
They said you couldn't lose fat and gain muscles at the same time….they were wrong! http://www.gainmuscleslosefat.net
Health is a life time asset and to achieve it we have to wok hard. Regular workout helps in maintaining our fitness. We lost plenty of water during daily workout. Thus, it is needed that take water in appropriate amount.
Thanks for this informative post.
