Hi
I'm curious about the metabolic surge workout. We were taught that to activate fast twitch, type II muscle fibres we needed to use heavy loads due to the size principle theory whereby the larger type II motor units won't fire unless they are under a heavy load or are asked to move very quickly as in plyo work.
So doing 3reps rest, 3reps rest and so on, is it really activating enough of the fast twitch motor units and their muscle fibres? Also since, the fast twitch muscle fibres fatigue faster than slow twitch fibres will we not be relying more and more of the slow twitch fibres as we continue into the longer rest intervals on the metabolic surge time/density training?
Having said that, I started out with pushups just doing as many as i could on add breaks while watching TV with no scientific rationale or knowledge except to do more and achieved quite reasonable hypertrophy getting up to 70full depth pushups.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
